Direct Initiative

The Preamble of the Constitution states that the "reason" for the Constitution is to "establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity". Our government is functioning in total opposition to these principles. The government is supposed to act to benefit the people not to their detriment.
To quote Article VI of the Constitution, "The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution". Also, It is a fundamental principle that all acts of officials not derived from the delegated powers of the constitution are null and void from inception, not just from the point at which a court may find them unconstitutional.
Our elected officials violate the principles and objectives of the Constitution on a daily basis.
The main reason we have a congress, instead of "direct democracy" is that at the time, modes of transportation and communication made direct involvement of the people impossible. That is no longer the case. And since Congress no longer acts in our best interests, maybe it should be eliminated.
While the authors of the Constitution were cautious of granting too much power to the government, and allowed for impeachment of elected officials, they never dreamed that we could ever have a totally incompetent and corrupt congress, that ignores the will of the people. Or that the party system could become so powerful and exclusive as to prevent any real change. It is the biggest flaw in the Constitution.
Obviously, our government is not working. I see only 5 options left to us.
        1) Our politicians actually make the changes necessary to make our government work again.
This has repeatedly been proven is not going to happen
        2) Recall or impeachment, but we just get another plug in puppet
        3) Referendum, but that also relies on politicians
        2) Direct Initiative
        3) Civil War,as a last resort, but which Thomas Jefferson admitted may be necessary

Initiative, Referendum and Recall are three powers reserved to the voters to enable them, by petition, to propose or repeal legislation or to remove an elected official from office.
A direct initiative is when a ballot measure is originated by the people by petition and placed directly on the ballot.
Referendum is when the Legislature refers a measure to the voters for their approval.
Recall is a procedure that allows citizens to remove and replace a public official before the end of a term of office.         You decide.
